Dental Anxiety Care
Dental anxiety NYC care at Centre Dental is about how we deliver dentistry — slower-paced first visits, full transparency on what each step involves, sedation when warranted, and treatment plans paced to what the patient can handle. We work routinely with patients who have postponed care for years.
- No-treatment first consultation if requested
- Tour of the operatory before any procedure
- Nitrous oxide available for patients who need additional comfort
- Bilingual reassurance in English and 中文
- Step-by-step explanation of every procedure
- Pause and stop signals respected at every visit
“A patient who has avoided dentistry for ten years did not arrive at that point because they enjoy avoiding it. The first visit is about earning back the trust that something or someone broke. Treatment plans come after that, not before.”

What Anxiety-Aware Care Looks Like Here
Many of our new patients have not been to a dentist in five, ten, or fifteen years. The first appointment is a conversation, not a procedure: medical history, dental history including the experiences that built the anxiety, current concerns, and what the patient wants to be true at the end of treatment. If a clinical exam happens at all on the first visit, it happens at the patient pace — chair tilted up, no pressure, narrating what we are looking at. X-rays only if you agree. Treatment planning is presented in writing afterward, not pressed for a decision in the chair. Most anxious patients tell us this is the most respectful first dental visit they have had.
Sedation Is an Option, Not a Default
Sedation matters for some anxiety patients and not others. For patients whose anxiety is severe enough that they have postponed comprehensive care for years, nitrous oxide combined with a slower, narrated pace can make a significant difference. For patients with milder anxiety, simply a calmer environment and more explanation may be enough. The approach is discussed together at the consultation, not decided in advance.
The "Stop Signal" Standard
At every appointment, raising your left hand means stop — work pauses immediately, no questions. Most patients never use it; knowing it exists is what changes how the appointment feels. We narrate before we do — "we are going to take an X-ray now," "you will feel pressure but not pain for the next thirty seconds," "we will pause when this side is finished." Predictability defuses anxiety better than reassurance does. Surprise causes the panic; explanation prevents it.
Pacing the Treatment Plan
Patients who have avoided care for years usually need significant treatment — and presenting all of it at once is overwhelming. We sequence the plan into phases: relieve current pain or infection first, stabilize the foundation second, address esthetics or implants third. Each phase is a decision point where you can stop, take a break, or continue. For most anxious patients, phase one is the only commitment they need to make on the first visit. The rest gets decided as confidence rebuilds.

常见疑问
常见问答
I have not been to the dentist in over ten years. Where do I even start?
With a no-treatment consultation. Tell us at booking that the first visit is just to talk and meet the team. We discuss your history, what created the anxiety, what your current concerns are, and what would feel manageable as a next step. No procedures unless you ask for them; no pressure to commit to a plan at the visit.
How much does the anxiety-aware first visit cost?
A consultation-only visit (no exam, no X-rays) is typically complimentary at Centre Dental. A consultation with a clinical exam and X-rays carries a modest fee and is the necessary input for any treatment plan. We confirm the cost beforehand and do not bill for sedation that is not used.
Will sedation make me unconscious?
No. Nitrous oxide produces relaxation and reduced anxiety, not unconsciousness — you remain fully awake and able to communicate throughout. We discuss the option at the consultation and use it whenever it helps you have a more comfortable experience.
Can I bring a family member or friend with me?
Yes. Many anxious patients bring someone for the consultation and the first procedure visit. We ask the support person to sit in the operatory with you during the consultation; for procedures, they typically wait in the reception area unless you request otherwise. Whatever lowers the anxiety is fine with us.
What if I start to panic during a procedure?
Raise your left hand — work stops immediately, the lights come up, the chair tilts upright. We talk through what is happening, take a break, and continue only when you are ready. If continuing is not the right answer that day, we reschedule. No pressure to "push through" — that is the experience that builds anxiety, and it is not how we work.
Will you judge me for the condition of my teeth?
No. Patients with severe avoidance often have decay, gum disease, broken teeth, and missing teeth. We see this routinely — it is the reason anxiety-aware practices exist. Our job is to fix what can be fixed without commenting on what brought you here. Most patients tell us this is the part that surprised them most.
Are anxiety-aware appointments longer or more expensive?
First visits are slightly longer — typically 60 minutes versus 30. There is no surcharge for taking the time. Sedation, when used, is billed for the sedation itself. The treatment costs (cleanings, fillings, crowns, etc.) are the same as for any patient.
