Overview

Comfortable Dentistry

Centre Dental offers nitrous oxide (laughing gas) for patients who experience dental anxiety. It produces relaxation within minutes, wears off quickly, and lets you drive home after your visit.

  • Nitrous oxide (laughing gas) for mild-to-moderate anxiety
  • Effects begin within minutes and wear off completely within five minutes of stopping
  • You remain fully awake, comfortable, and able to communicate throughout
  • You can drive yourself home after the appointment
  • Bilingual pre-procedure consultation in English and 中文
For most anxious patients, nitrous oxide makes the difference between a visit they dread and one they can actually get through. We use it whenever it helps.

How It Works

The Process

01 / 03

What Nitrous Oxide Feels Like

Nitrous oxide is inhaled through a small nasal mask and produces a sense of warmth, relaxation, and mild euphoria within two to three minutes. You remain fully conscious and can speak with the dentist throughout the procedure. The effect fades completely within five minutes of removing the mask — most patients drive themselves home with no issue.

Who Benefits Most

Patients with mild-to-moderate dental anxiety, a strong gag reflex, or a low pain threshold often find nitrous oxide significantly improves their experience. It does not replace local anesthesia — the injection still numbs the area — but it removes the psychological edge that makes routine dentistry feel overwhelming for some patients.

What to Expect

Let the front desk know when booking that you would like nitrous oxide. On the day of your appointment, eat a light meal two to three hours before — a very full stomach can occasionally cause mild nausea with nitrous. No other preparation is required. After the appointment, you can return to normal activity immediately.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does nitrous oxide cost?

Nitrous oxide adds a modest amount to the cost of a visit. Most dental insurance plans do not cover it, but many patients find the cost worthwhile for a significantly more comfortable experience. We confirm the fee before your appointment.

Can I drive home after nitrous oxide?

Yes. Nitrous oxide wears off completely within five minutes of removing the nasal mask. Unlike oral or IV sedation, there is no lingering drowsiness — you can drive, return to work, and resume normal activity immediately.

Do you offer IV or oral sedation?

No. Centre Dental offers nitrous oxide for patient comfort. We do not provide oral conscious sedation or IV sedation. Patients requiring deeper sedation for complex procedures would be referred to an appropriate specialist facility.

Will it completely eliminate anxiety?

Nitrous oxide significantly reduces anxiety for most patients, but the degree varies. It is most effective for patients with mild-to-moderate anxiety. If you have severe dental phobia that has caused you to avoid care for years, please discuss your history with Dr. Shi at your consultation so we can plan your care accordingly.
